Calculation report
A PDF for your consent application. Cover page, compliance summary, element-by-element schedule, and appendix tables showing every layer and the R-value it contributes.
H1-01 Energy efficiency
Clause H1 of the Building Code sets how much heat a house is allowed to lose. Every new dwelling has to demonstrate it meets H1 before building consent is granted, and the demonstration has to be on paper, with numbers a council reviewer can follow.
There is more than one way to demonstrate it. The Schedule Method compares each part of the building against a fixed table. It is the quicker route, but it only works where glazing is 30 percent or less of the gross wall area, and it was removed in the 6th Edition of H1/AS1. The Calculation Method compares the whole building's heat loss against a reference building of the same shape. It allows glazing up to 40 percent of gross wall area, and it lets a generous window in one room be offset by better insulation somewhere else. That trade is usually what makes a modern design work.
We use the Calculation Method, worked from first principles under NZS 4214:2006.
01
A PDF for your consent application. Cover page, compliance summary, element-by-element schedule, and appendix tables showing every layer and the R-value it contributes.
02
A PDF sized to fit the placeholder on your H1 zones sheet, so the numbers sit on the drawings and not only in a separate document.
03
A plain text file of the insulation keynotes, ready to paste into Revit or AutoCAD without reformatting.
The calculation is done from your drawings, not from your estimates. To start we need the site address, which sets the climate zone, and your plans, meaning elevations, sections and the wall, roof and floor build-ups.
If you already have a wall schedule, a window and door schedule or keynote text, send those and we will work from them. If you do not, we read what we can off the plans and ask about the rest.
An H1 report covers energy efficiency and nothing else. It is not a building consent, and it does not cover the rest of the Building Code. If the design changes after the report is issued, the numbers change with it.
If it is a new dwelling going through building consent, yes. Clause H1 applies to the building whatever its size. Work built under a Building Act exemption does not go to council for consent, but the Building Code still applies to it, so ask us before you assume you can skip the calculation.
All six. The zone comes from the site address and sets the reference R-values your building is measured against. In Zone 1, which covers Auckland and Northland, those references are R6.6 for the roof, R2.0 for walls, R0.46 for windows and R2.5 for a suspended floor.
We tell you before we issue anything. Under the Calculation Method every element also has to reach at least half the reference R-value for its zone, and that floor is not negotiable. If something falls short we come back with the options, which are re-detailing that element, moving to the Modelling Method, or lodging an alternative solution. We will not paper over it and let you find out at council.
The 6th Edition became operative on 27 November 2025. The 5th Edition Amendment 1 can still be used for consent applications lodged up to 26 November 2026. We confirm which edition applies to your job and state it on the cover page of the report.
Tell us about the job and upload your drawings. We confirm scope and price by email before anything is due.
